Easy Gin Rummy Tips for beginners

Gin Rummy is one of those classic card games that is played among friends, in a kitchen table but Gin Rummy card games are also played in country clubs and Las Vegas casinos.

As with any other classic card game, Gin Rummy is easy to learn, but for beginners it takes some tips and strategy to get a knack for the game. I've put together some tips especially for beginners who want to really get good at their game of Gin Rummy. This list of gin tips for beginners is a work in progress, so check often:

Tip #1: Knock EARLY! Make sure to knock as early as you can. This basic tip applies to both standard Gin Rummy and Oklahoma Gin Rummy. You might not earn the twenty-five bonus points, but you will earn extra deadwood points plus the line score. The line score helps once the game is over.

Tip #2: Be careful to break into three melds when you decide that you will take an early knock. Two of these melds will need to be either runs or sets and the other one is a number of low cards that will sum up to less than the early knock number.

The longer you stay in the game, the more unattractive early knocking gets because your opponent has more time to make melds and so you won’t be able to catch him with more deadwood in his hand.

Tip #3: Try not to speculate or expose your hand when you are playing the game of Gin Rummy. Each time that you take a card from the discard pile, you are giving your opponent the edge because these cards are already exposed and the opponent will be able to make a mental note of your hand.

The opponent will then use this information from your hand and create a defensive tactic to play into your meld and keep you from making your own melds. Also your cards that are not melded will become deadwood in your hand and be disadvantageous to you at the close of play.

Tip #4: If you use the advertising method in Gin Rummy, you can get your opponent to throw the same rank card down because he or she will think that you are not collecting the same cards. Advertising can work against you as well because if you are not careful and you are playing with a pro, they can use this tactic against you by being able to tell what cards you need and which you don’t need.
